EV
EV or Electric Vehicles are fast becoming a popular choice for Americans. Aside from Tesla, many other car brands are offering environment-friendly vehicles including Nissan, Ford, Chevy, BMW, Fiat, and more.
EV’s are classified into two categories: Full Battery Electric Vehicles with a 6.6 kW On-board Charger and Plug-in Hybrids with a 3.3kW On-board charger. While they’re usually a tad bit pricier compared to the usual gasoline or diesel engine vehicles, EV’s are actually offering plenty of savings!
An electronic vehicle requires no oil changes and very little maintenance. Since you need to charge it to make it run, you can skip the trip to the gas station and use a charging station instead.
The Demand for EV Continues to Rise
Climate change is felt everywhere and you certainly know that for sure if you’ve experienced one of Florida’s harsh hurricanes. Perhaps a lot of people are truly exerting effort in making the world a better place. EV sales continue to increase yearly in the country. Out of over 17 million vehicles sold in the US in 2017, 199,826 of those are EV’s. This is expected to increase year by year and reach up to 3.5 million EV sales in 2025.
EVAdoption listed down EV sales per state in 2017 and 2018. It is very impressive that Florida takes 4th place across the United States when it comes to EV sales. In 2017, there were 6,573 EV’s sold in the State. This jumped by 108.5% in 2018 when 13,705 EV’s were sold! From 0.52% EV market share within Florida in 2017, it increased to 1.03% in 2018 – that’s 98.08%!
EV Charger Basics
Because of the continuous increase in EV demand and sales, more charging stations are made available to the public. Simply visit the PlugShare website to know the nearest public EV charging station in your area.
For some, going to an EV charging station can get inconvenient. Charging an EV is not as quick as fueling up a regular car. It may take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours for a full charge.
Charging times may also differ based on the type of EV you are using and the current climate or environmental condition. Note that not all EV’s use the same kind of charging station, too. To give you a brief overview, here are the charging times based on the type of charging station you use:
- 120 V 1.4kW Level 1 Charging Station: Less than 4.5 miles of range per hour of charging (Full Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid EV)
- 240 V 3.8kW Level 2 Charging Station: Less than 12 miles of range per hour of charging (Full Battery Electric and Plug-In Hybrid EV)
- 240 V 7.2kW Level 2 Charging Station: Less than 26 miles of range per hour of charging (Full Battery Electric) & Less than 12 miles of range per hour of charging (Plug-In Hybrid EV)
- DC Fast Charger Level 3: Less than 40 miles per 10 minutes (Available in some Full Battery Electric models)
Your Own EV Charger for Your Home or Office
While charging stations continue to multiply across Florida, wouldn’t it be more convenient if you had your own EV charging station at home or in the office? By looking at the power required to charge an EV, a regular power outlet might not be enough for your own charging station. Furthermore, by having your own charging station, you may end up with such huge electric bills every month.
Wayne’s Solar will help you make your charging an EV an even more convenient and affordable experience. On its own, using an Electric Vehicle can already get you up to 50% savings on fuel and maintenance costs compared to a regular vehicle.
